In line with the success Country Programme Kenya has recorded this year integrating poultry into the practice of agroecology among smallholders, today we celebrate World Egg Day. We are celebrating not just eggs but also what they represent: resilience, opportunity, nutrition, and local solutions.
Why eggs matter:
- A single hen can lay ~250–300 eggs per year, offering a steady income stream for smallholder farmers.
 - Eggs are a high-quality protein source that can boost household nutrition—especially for women and children.
 - Integrating poultry into agroecology helps close nutrient loops: eggs, manure, and pest control working together in synergy.
 - Encouraging the use of locally sourced, low-cost housing materials ensures sustainability and ownership.
