Vegetables and fruits are among the most perishable farm products — facing some of the highest post-harvest losses in Kenya. These losses not only reduce farmer incomes but also undermine household nutrition and national food security.

The ongoing training by Acts for Change Trust targeting 60 Community Extension Agents and technical project staff, funded by Fastenaktion – Action de Carême – Azione Quaresimale and implemented under the Country Programme Kenya, has placed special focus on value addition and preservation of fruits and vegetables. Through practical, low-cost techniques such as solar drying and jam-making, participants have gained hands-on skills that will be cascaded to over 5,000 smallholder farmers — equipping them to reduce waste, increase incomes, and make their harvests last longer.

Why this focus matters:

  • Fruits and vegetables experience the highest post-harvest losses in Kenya’s food system.
  • Simple preservation methods extend shelf life, improve food availability, and stabilize rural incomes.
  • Investing in small-scale, practical approaches is a high-value, high-impact pathway for improving livelihoods and reducing poverty.

By building capacity for community-based value addition and preservation, we are ensuring that every harvest counts — for farmers, families, and the country.

Special thanks to Fastenaktion – Action de Carême – Azione Quaresimale for making this possible and the six grassroots organisation that diligently lead the implementation.
